Ottawa firms leading way in video games, touch screens, CTV Ottawa, (November 14, 2010)

Tech Now broadcast: Nov. 14, 2010, Part 1 (click into the video clip in the right column), CTV Ottawa's Tech Now highlights You i Labs and TransGaming (two companies from Ottawa’s Wireless Cluster) as well as OCRI's trade mission to Helsinki and Stockholm in October 2010.

October 25-28, 2010

OCRI and companies from Ottawa’s Wireless Cluster visited Helsinki and Stockholm to present Ottawa’s wireless strengths to companies and trade officials in both cities. The visit is a combined effort with Canadian Embassies in Sweden and Finland, Swedish tech cluster “Kista Science City”, the Interactive Institute, and Helsinki’s technology park “Otaniemi”. Ottawa offers partnership opportunities, talent and a wireless ecosystem backed by a strong network of national and university R&D laboratories, and Canada’s aggressive R&D tax credit system.

Ottawa’s OCRI Global Marketing received a vote of confidence and a $240,000 matching funds grant from the Government of Canada’s Invest Canada-Community Initiatives (ICCI) program. The City of Ottawa is contributing $180,000 of the matching funds for the $240,000 Federal money, with the balance contributed from OCRI and other private sector sources. Total funds committed is $480,000.

Ottawa, “Canada’s Creative Economy Capital”, is attending The Future of Wireless conference in Cambridge, UK, to present what it believes is one of the world’s most desirable wireless ecosystems. Four of the globe’s top five wireless companies – Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson and Huawei – all have significant R&D facilities in Ottawa. They are part of a 367-company, 27,000-employee strong talent bank that spans the breadth of wireless infrastructure and services.

An example of U.S. President Barack Obama’s vision for urban America already exists less than 100 km from the U.S. border – in Ottawa, Canada. It’s the same city, and the only Canadian city, that McKinsey & Co., partnered with the World Economic Forum, has dubbed an “Innovation Hot Spring”. Innovation Hot Springs are fast-growing hubs on track to becoming world players.

April 6 - 16, 2010

Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien led a business delegation from Canada’s capital city on a trade mission to the Chinese cities of Beijing, Chongqing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The trade mission was coordinated by OCRI, Ottawa’s lead economic development agency, and is the eighth mission by OCRI’s global marketing team over the last four years.

Ottawa wins a place as one top seven intelligent communities in the world according to the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF). ICF singled out Ottawa for its relentless focus on education and start-ups adding that the number of partnerships and programs in place are almost too many to count.
